Tacha Breaks Two Guinness World Records for Most Makeovers in a Day
Nigerian reality star and influencer Anita Natacha Akide, popularly known as Symply Tacha, has officially made history, twice. The 29-year-old, who rose to fame through Big Brother Naija and later appeared on MTV’s The Challenge, has earned two Guinness World Records for performing the most cosmetic makeovers in eight hours and in 24 hours (individual).
On October 11, 2024, Tacha transformed her passion for beauty into a historic achievement at a makeup event in Lagos, Nigeria. From sunrise to midnight, she worked tirelessly, overcoming storms, power outages, and exhaustion to complete 144 full makeovers within 24 hours. Her feat shattered the previous record of 111 makeovers set by Mary Yongai of Sierra Leone, surpassing it by more than 30.
Each makeover followed Guinness World Records’ strict standards, including foundation, concealer, blush, two eyeshadows, mascara, lip liner, gloss, finishing powder, and precise eyebrow styling. To meet the challenge, Tacha ensured that every look was unique, designed to complement each woman’s individual features.
Her event space, set up behind a glass wall in Lagos, allowed fans and onlookers to cheer her on as they watched the transformation unfold. What began as a beauty challenge quickly became a moment of empowerment.
“The idea of daring to be different drove me,” Tacha said. “Makeup has always been my safe space, it’s how I express myself. From childhood, I was fascinated by colours, even when my mum didn’t approve. She’d throw my products away, and I’d save up to buy them again. That persistence taught me never to stop fighting for what I love.”
That early determination would prove essential. Midway through the attempt, a nine-hour storm swept through the area, damaging equipment and disrupting the setup. “The rain poured so heavily that our screens, monitors, and branding fell apart,” she recalled. “The wind scattered the venue, and we had to rebuild from scratch mid-event.”
Then came multiple power outages, a common challenge in Lagos but Tacha refused to give up. “The lights went off three or four times, but I kept going,” she said. “My team turned on their phone flashlights, and I continued doing makeovers in the dark. It wasn’t just about makeup anymore; it was about proving that nothing could stop us.”
For Tacha, this record was about more than personal glory, it was about representation. “I wanted to show that Nigerian women can achieve anything they put their minds to,” she said. “That creativity is powerful and African women deserve global recognition.”
Her team, led by project manager Seun Oluyemi Anthony, also known as Otunba, played a crucial role in organizing the event and ensuring a steady flow of volunteers for the makeovers. “The people kept me going,” Tacha added. “My assistants, the crowd cheering outside, they gave me energy. Every model that sat in my chair reminded me why I started. I knew so many young girls were watching, waiting to see if I could prove that limits are illusions.”
When the Guinness World Records team confirmed her success, Tacha said she was “beyond emotional.” “I screamed, cried, hugged my sister and assistants, we were all overwhelmed,” she said. “It felt like the whole of Nigeria was celebrating with me. Seeing the love online, the comments, the joy, it felt like everyone who ever believed in me was right there.”
As congratulatory messages poured in, Tacha made it clear that this victory was a collective one. “This record isn’t just mine,” she said. “It belongs to every girl who has ever dared to start over, every creative person who has been doubted, and every dreamer who still believes that greatness can come from anywhere.”
Looking ahead, Tacha hinted that this is only the beginning. “I’m already thinking about breaking another record,” she revealed. “I want my story to remind the world that greatness has no geography and that Africa’s creative power deserves to be seen, celebrated, and remembered.”
